CHICAGO, Il. - Sept. 27, 2007
Mobile broadband leader Sprint (NYSE: S) was honored with the Industry Innovation award last night for its XOHMTM WiMAX mobile Internet initiative. The industry recognition occurred during the WiMAX World USA 2007 conference in Chicago, one of the first cities nationally slated to receive the advanced mobility service when commercially available in 2008.
"This recognition - in Chicago - of Sprint's groundbreaking mobility vision is especially gratifying," remarked Barry West, Sprint CTO and President, XOHM Business Unit. "The cellular industry was born here over 25 years ago and history will be made again with XOHM mobile WiMAX service. Our selection of mobile WiMAX technology catalyzed many in the computer, telecommunications and consumer electronics industries to support WiMAX and customers will reap the benefits of that convergence."
Sprint XOHM WiMAX mobile broadband capability, once embedded in business, computing and consumer electronic devices, will extend the home or office Internet experience to other places. Sprint is developing an advanced wireless broadband network designed to mobilize the Internet, bring wireless innovation to devices and deliver new mobile multimedia applications to consumer, business and government customers.
XOHM customers will be able to experience new interactive communications, high-speed Internet browsing, social networking tools, local and location-centric services, and multimedia services including music, video, mobile TV and on-demand products through a new Internet portal. The company plans WiMAX pre-commercial service in the Chicago, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas by year-end 2007. Commercial service is expected to be available in a number of markets starting April 2008 and anticipated to cover 100 million people by year-end 2008 in conjunction with a planned partnership with Clearwire.
The annual Best of WiMAX World awards recognize leaders in the development and deployment of WiMAX technologies, and Sprint was selected from a field of 16 finalists from among more than 80 applications.
